Solid WOOD FLOORING

Solid wood floors are as old as time but modern advances such as engineered boards and high spec laminates have seen these having to take a side step to allow room. Solid oak floors still have their place both domestically and commercially but to install one can often see the preparation of the sub floors cost nearly as much as the flooring itself.

From our experience 95% of solid oak floors will be parquet blocks, mosaic panels or strip floors such as 57mm oak maple, beech etc. They are still installed a lot in commercial areas and will often be found in badminton courts, school and village halls and many more.

There are still occasions where solid oak planks are used but they are few and far between due to the nature of the wood naturally wanting to expand and contract more than an engineered plank which have been manufactured to be more stable.

If it is a solid wood floor you want then from our experience, and not all good ones, which is why we know, the floor must be nailed to the sub floor or joists or glued directly to the sub floor being latex screed or ply. We will not fit a solid oak floor on underlay as there is just to many variables than can happen. As stated above the nature of the wood wants to move constantly with climate and humidity and using PVA glue to hold a solid floor together just will not last. Trust us, we’ve tried and failed in this method. The floor needs to have full adhesion or be attached to the sub floor and then no only will it last it will look better with age.
